ESL: Initial Assessment (During the first two weeks)
- The ESL staff at the student’s school of attendance will:
- review the results of the Home Language Survey;
- review any school records and evidence of past schooling that are available;
- determine whether an ELP assessment is necessary;
- determine if the student requires a placement in the ESL program based on the W-APT and the multiple criteria listed above;
- consider the State’s ELP levels described within the PA ELPS standards when placing students in an instructional program for ELLs.
- maintain all assessment results and anecdotal records in a portfolio for each student evaluated for a placement in the ESL program.
- The ESL and regular education staff and administration will communicate with the student’s parents using an interpreter as needed.
